With more people exercising now than ever before it is clear that sporting injuries are becoming more common with up to 52% of the sporting population saying they have been injured before during or after sport. Even with these statistics many people ignore their injuries and continue on, in turn leading to long term health issues and more problematic pain.
An interesting statistic is that to overcome a sporting injury almost 3 in 5 people take oral painkillers, a third turn to heat and ice packs but physiotherapy combined with acupuncture treatment can be very effective treatment for sports injuries but only 11% undertake traditional acupuncture as part of their treatment.
Paula Campbell, a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) explains,
“Many people in this country put up with their pain even though there are solutions. Often issues with musculoskeletal problems can be alleviated with the correct diagnosis and treatment, it is important to visit a professional as early as possible after injury to be diagnosed and have a treatment plan put into place.
Acupuncture is an evidence based therapy that has been proven to help reduce pain by releasing your own pain relieving chemicals and activating the higher pain relief centres in the brain, increasing blood flow to promote recovery, reducing muscle spasm and tightness and helps to restore movement around the injury.
The Traditional Chinese view of acupuncture is one of the oldest tested methods of medicine and is based on the movement of energy through the body. It is believed that pain and illness can occur if the flow of energy gets disrupted. Acupuncture can help the healing process by stimulating specific parts of the body to regulate the flow of energy.
Many people do not understand that acupuncture can help them so it is all about re-educating the population about this underused therapy.”
