What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, tone, flexibility and posture. It was originally created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, and since then there have been different types of Pilates developed.

“Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.”

Joseph Pilates.

Pilates is sometimes confused with yoga whereas in actual fact the two are quite different. Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India, the physical element of which focuses on stretching. Pilates on the other hand is concerned with strengthening and control and aims to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Is Pilates just about core strength?

Core strength is an important part of Pilates as the core is the ‘foundation’ of the body; a weak core means the body cannot support itself, which can lead to bad posture, aches and pains and a greater propensity for injury. But a strong core alone is not enough for a healthy body, which is why Pilates is designed to exercise every part of the body equally. It trains the body evenly without overusing certain muscle groups, develops muscle strength and tone without ‘bulk’, improves fitness levels and energy and helps to provide a strong baseline strength for the body to carry out everyday tasks and most sports with better control and less potential for injury.

Pilates classes at Truly Therapeutic

At Truly Therapeutic we teach modified Pilates.

Therapist led

Our instructors are physiotherapists/sports rehabilitation therapists who, along with their extensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and injury repair, are also fully trained by the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute) This form of Pilates is designed to prevent any excessive strain on the body and each exercise is broken down into a variety of levels of difficulty.

Small class sizes

Pilates classes are often undertaken in large groups in gyms or halls. Not at Truly Therapeutic. We teach in small groups to offer personal and condition specific Pilates by our qualified therapists, tailored to your level and needs. Exercises are demonstrated on several levels and this means that everyone can work at their own level with the opportunity of individual guidance when needed and progression over time. Classes can be targeted to your own goals.

Important information about Pilates classes – please read before booking

  • For safety reasons, all class participants must complete a pre-class health questionnaire.
  • An initial Pilates assessment/induction session is MANDATORY before starting the classes at Truly Therapeutic. This session will teach all the essentials of Pilates to get the best outcome from the classes and allow for completion of a health questionnaire and to discuss/practice appropriate adaptation of exercises based on any health or physical problems. The mandatory introduction session needs to be booked in advance of starting the class. Should you go on to attend Pilates classes there is no charge for this assessment.
  • There is a maximum of 6-7 people per class to allow for individual attention from the Pilates tutor.
  • Classes are booked per month and are payable in advance. At your first class you will be asked to pay £26 by cash or card. Should you wish to continue to attend Pilates classes following this you will be asked to arrange a standing order of £26 to be paid on the 1st/7th/14th or 21st of the month depending on your preferred date. You are not signing a contract and standing order payments are not for a fixed term. Should you decide at any point you wish to stop attending classes you can cancel the standing order at the end of the month.
  • The monthly amount secures your place in the class. Any non-payment will mean your place in class will be removed.
  • If you are unable to attend your class please inform us with as much notice as you can. This will allow us to be flexible with one off requests to change classes in a week. If there is space available in the classes to change from your normal session we will do our best to accommodate your request.
  • The practice is closed for the Christmas, New Year and Easter Bank holidays and there will be no Pilates classes during these times. We are also closed on the other bank holidays during the year but requests to swap to other classes will be accepted. For the May and August bank holidays on request extra sessions can be made available to cover bank holiday closure.
  • There will be no refunds if you are unable to attend a class.
