What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, tone, flexibility and posture. It was originally created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, and since then there have been different types of Pilates developed.
“Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.”
Pilates is sometimes confused with yoga whereas in actual fact the two are quite different. Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India, the physical element of which focuses on stretching. Pilates on the other hand is concerned with strengthening and control and aims to improve general fitness and wellbeing.
Is Pilates just about core strength?
Core strength is an important part of Pilates as the core is the ‘foundation’ of the body; a weak core means the body cannot support itself, which can lead to bad posture, aches and pains and a greater propensity for injury. But a strong core alone is not enough for a healthy body, which is why Pilates is designed to exercise every part of the body equally. It trains the body evenly without overusing certain muscle groups, develops muscle strength and tone without ‘bulk’, improves fitness levels and energy and helps to provide a strong baseline strength for the body to carry out everyday tasks and most sports with better control and less potential for injury.
Pilates classes at Truly Therapeutic
At Truly Therapeutic we teach modified Pilates.
Our instructors are physiotherapists/sports rehabilitation therapists who, along with their extensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and injury repair, are also fully trained by the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute) This form of Pilates is designed to prevent any excessive strain on the body and each exercise is broken down into a variety of levels of difficulty.
Small class sizes
Pilates classes are often undertaken in large groups in gyms or halls. Not at Truly Therapeutic. We teach in small groups to offer personal and condition specific Pilates by our qualified therapists, tailored to your level and needs. Exercises are demonstrated on several levels and this means that everyone can work at their own level with the opportunity of individual guidance when needed and progression over time. Classes can be targeted to your own goals.
